| About | |
Kids Market, Inc. exists to help the women and children of Kosciusko County. We are a non-profit organization, with 501(c)(3) status, and our goal is to support the women and children that live in our county. We do that by holding two consignment sales each year - one in March and another in September. Families bring their gently-used maternity and children’s items, and we organize the items and hold a consignment sale.
How it Works:
Kids Market, Inc. is completely operated by volunteers. During the 4-day sale weekend, each volunteer works a 4-hour shift and in return are invited to shop at the Volunteer Pre-Sale. Our consignors are families who bring their items to sell at our sale. Consignors are responsible for preparing their items according to our specific instructions. Consignors put in hours of their own time getting their items ready. In return, they receive 66% of their selling price and are invited to shop at the Consignor Pre-Sale.
We have many area businesses that help us out in the execution of our sale weekend by donating supplies, food, and time. We are honored by their partnership with us.
The Weekend:
The weekend of the sale is a busy time. Thursday and Friday mornings are spent setting up the space and welcoming consignors dropping off their items. Over these two days we probably have about 40,000 items come through our doors to be inspected, sorted, and then stocked on the floors. During Friday afternoon, the leadership team makes sure everything is ready for the Pre-Sales. At 4:00 Friday afternoon we open our doors for our Volunteers Pre-Sale. The Consignor Pre-Sale is at 6:00. We close our Pre-Sales at 8:00.
On Saturday morning a line is already forming before 7:00am, and at 8:00 we open our doors to the public. The Public Sale is open until 2:30, when we close for a half hour to re-group and re-set our check-out computers. Doors re-open at 3:00pm, and everything remaining is sold at half off. The sale closes at 5:00pm. At that time all remaining items are sorted by seller number for Pick-Up on Sunday. Items designated for donation are unpinned, taken off hangers, and boxed up for local charities. On Sunday, consignors come to pick up their unsold items. Also during this time, community charities come and pick up boxes and boxes of donated items. By 9:00pm we have the building empty! The consignors checks are mailed out the following week.
The Results:
It’s a busy weekend, but it’s SO worth it. We are humbled by how many people are touched by this little sale. Every year we are told stories about how Kids Market has impacted many lives.
Our favorite times come after the sale: when the families we have adopted come and get clothing for free; when the organizations come to collect their boxes of donated items; when we hear the stories of how this little sale has helped the women and children that live around us; and when we meet with local non-profits to make financial donations to their organizations.
After we have paid our bills and budgeted for our next sale, we give it all away. In 2011 we were honored to donate over $25,000 to non-profits in Kosciusko County. We have found organizations locally that align perfectly with our mission, and we are thankful for the work these people are doing to impact the lives of families in Kosciusko County. Since our first sale in the fall of 2001, we have donated over $110,000!!!
We look forward to the future and what it holds for Kids Market, Inc.!
Thank you for your support! Cindy Clingan, President
